{"id":2317,"date":"2023-01-20T15:17:42","date_gmt":"2023-01-20T23:17:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vanwinefest.ca\/tradedays\/?page_id=2317"},"modified":"2026-04-27T16:37:26","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T23:37:26","slug":"terry-threlfall-scholarship","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/vanwinefest.ca\/tradedays\/terry-threlfall-scholarship\/","title":{"rendered":"Terry Threlfall Scholarship"},"content":{"rendered":"[vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]The Vancouver International Wine Festival is pleased to partner with the BC Hospitality Foundation, the Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers, Meyer Family Vineyards, and the Threlfall family on a scholarship in the name of our beloved friend and colleague, Terry Threlfall, who passed away suddenly in October 2020.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"font-size-20 m-font-size-16\">The scholarship<b> <\/b><\/span><span class=\"font-size-20 m-font-size-16\">offers a rare and immersive opportunity for the winner of the Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers (CAPS) BC &amp; Vancouver International Wine Festival Sommelier of the Year award: a unique multi-day wine experience in\u00a0<\/span><strong class=\"font-size-20 m-font-size-16\">London, England<\/strong><span class=\"font-size-20 m-font-size-16\">, designed to expand the winner\u2019s knowledge, skills, and exposure to the international wine scene. This scholarship celebrates Terry\u2019s passion for wine, mentorship, and excellence, providing an experience that goes far beyond the classroom or the tasting room.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The 2026 winner is <strong>Michael Littleford, This is Wine School<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Meyer Family Vineyards generously provided seed money for the scholarship fund through sales of the winery\u2019s Tribute Series Chardonnay \u2013 Terry Threlfall.\u00a0 The BC Hospitality Foundation (BCHF), which will administer the scholarship, invites others to donate online in order to ensure Terry\u2019s legacy lives on for many years.<\/p>\n<p>Born and raised in BC, Terry Threlfall was influential on the local, national, and international wine scenes. Career highlights included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Developing a groundbreaking wine program as Wine Director at Hawksworth<\/li>\n<li>Repeatedly holding the position of Festival Sommelier at VanWineFest<\/li>\n<li>In 2012, being named Sommelier of the Year by Vancouver magazine, the VIWF, and California\u2019s <em>Sunset Magazine<\/em><\/li>\n<li>The first Canadian Sommelier to be a regular <em>Decanter<\/em> panelist<\/li>\n<li>Six years as Head Sommelier and Wine Buyer at London\u2019s Michelin-starred Chez Bruce<\/li>\n<li>Five years as Wine Buyer at London\u2019s prestigious Selfridges<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Terry passed away unexpectedly in October 2020, at the age of 43. He continues to be missed by his family, friends, and colleagues in the industry, who remember him as much for his warm personality, intelligence, and integrity as for his consummate professional skills and knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>Terry\u2019s brother, Dan Threlfall, notes, \u201c<em>Speaking on behalf of our whole family, we think it\u2019s a wonderful thing to have this opportunity to create a legacy in his memory.
